Mentoring – The building block for business success
The Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KWCCI) offers an informal business mentoring program where interested business owners can either seek mentoring or offer to mentor others.
Using its business contacts and connections, the KWCCI will make every effort to match mentors and mentees appropriately so both participants achieve maximum benefit from the partnership.
What does mentoring involve and why is it useful?
Business mentoring has become a popular practice over the past few years and is one tactic that can improve your business’ performance and help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Put simply, business mentoring involves two business people – a mentor and mentee - forming a mutually beneficial relationship. The mentee identifies areas of weakness and the direction they would like their business to take. The two then work together setting goals, discussing ideas and taking steps to help the mentee’s business prosper.
The role of business mentors and mentees
A business mentor is someone who is willing to impart their industry knowledge, business skills and life experience to help another’s business prosper. They often act as a sounding board for new ideas and strategies and can offer an objective viewpoint. They also expand their knowledge through teaching.
Business mentors can benefit your business as they help you identify and capitalise on opportunities.
A good mentor:
-
Possesses strong communication skills
-
Has a wealth of life and business experience
-
Makes an effort to develop strong rapport with the mentee
A good mentoree:
-
Is willing to learn and take another’s suggestions on board
-
Seeks to challenge traditional ideas to facilitate business growth
-
Is honest and realistic with themselves and their mentor
Mentees can expect to expand their repertoire of business contacts and strengthen relationships, increase their business perspective and adopt the skills and confidence required to produce a winning business.
Choosing the right mentor
When forming a mentor-mentee relationship, it is important both parties respect and trust one another. Mentees must feel comfortable divulging any concerns or fears to their mentor for the relationship to be successful.
In accordance, it is often highly beneficial for mentors and mentees from different industries and business backgrounds to come together as it allows mentors to adopt a fresh perspective and apply an objective viewpoint.
