FEBRUARY 2012
Presidents report
I had the pleasure of hosting our inaugural President’s lunch last week and what a great lunch it was. It was an opportunity to show off the Executive committee of our the Chamber as well as an opportunity to thank our business partners, whom without, we could not deliver what we are, to you, our members.
The lunch ran through the achievements we made in 2011 and laid out our plans for the coming 12 months. In reflecting on what we have achieved in 2011 it was quite staggering to put it to paper. Achievements such as launching our members value card; consistently delivering 2 monthly events with a high number of attendees- in fact two of our events in the last 6 months had over 100 people in attendance; and of course doubling the number of members in 12 months.
The next 12 months will certainly be no mean feat either- with goals of launching our mentoring program (which has already had a great response – see our mentoring article for more information); taking over the Kawana Farmers Markets from Caloundra Chamber of Commerce (again see the next article); and of course we have even larger growth plans for our membership numbers. At the crux of all of these projects is the fact that we want to ensure that we are delivering events and other opportunities that will help you achieve your business goals for the next 12 months. Whether that is through providing you with great networking events to meet new like minded business people, opportunities to showcase your own business at the markets, or help with furthering your knowledge. If you have any other ideas that you believe your Chamber could help you with, we would love to hear from you!
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event and if you would like to contact me at any time, my door is always open - my email address is president@kawanabiz.com.au or feel free to call on 0402 242 797.
Wishing you a very prosperous 2012
Jo.
Markets Update
As you may have seen or heard, the Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce are now one of three business partners to be involved in the running of the Kawana Farmers Markets Our other two business partners are Kawana Farmers Markets Pty Ltd (the famed Shane Stanley of Noosa Farmers Markets) and Stockland.
The markets are held each Saturday morning from 6am-12pm at Southern end of Sportsman Parade. In case you haven’t been along as yet, we have the freshest fruit and vegies as well as some great artisan stalls- from plants to silver jewellery to clothing, it is a great market with loads of promise!
The Executive committee saw this as a great opportunity for both the Chamber and our members as we believe we can:
· Provide you, our members with an opportunity to showcase your businesses to our wonderful local community;
· Provide our local schools with an ability to showcase their incredible students to our wonderful community; and
· Provide Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce an opportunity to speak to members of our community EVERY week.
Ian Rowe is heading up our Markets committee, so if you are keen to be involved (whether it be to offer some of your time to help the Chamber out, or to run a market stand yourself) please feel free to contact Ian (via Glenda).
Mentoring program
The Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce is extremely pleased with the response to our Mentoring program which kicks off next month and there are still a few spots left if you would like to be a part of this fantastic program, either as a mentor or mentoree.
In order to provide you with not only the knowledge, but also the drive to make change happen within your business, the Kawana mentoring program is a little different to most. Firstly, we have engaged the services of one of our members- Ariel Inigo from ActionCOACH Business Coaching to take our mentorees through 6 topics we felt were relevant to small business.
These include business planning, cashflow management, marketing, sales, the importance of processes and procedures and of course people. Mentorees will then be partnered with a Mentor or two to help them actually apply the learnings within their business.
Ariel is the most experienced ActionCOACH on the Sunshine Coast with extensive experience in business and coaching. Ariel relocated to the Sunshine Coast after successfully owning and operating the largest team of ActionCOACH coaches on the Gold Coast and wanting to find a new challenge- so we are obviously really excited about the support that he has provided us with.
The program includes:

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers a free service to help local businesses engage with social media.
Over the past three years USC students have assisted more than 65 local businesses to learn a little more about social media tools including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. In small groups, students will be developing social media strategies. Students will need to meet with you twice during the semester. An initial meeting will introduce you to the three chosen tools (Facebook, Twitter and Blogging) via an oral presentation at the University campus on a day to be arranged (between Monday 26th to Friday 30th March). At this presentation, once the students have shown you the three tools, you will be required to select one of the three tools as the focus of the project.
A second meeting, also on the University campus, will be held in the final week of classes (12 noon, June 1st). This presentation features a guest speaker from industry, presentation of the final report from students and a light afternoon tea. Students may also contact you by email with questions as they arise.
If you'd like to be involved, please contact Selina Tomasich on 5459 4469 or by email stomasic@usc.edu.au.
