DECEMBER NEWS
President's Report
Our new Executive committee has had a great start to the new term. With 16 of us on the committee there is certainly a lot happening! For those of you who could make the member value card launch, I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did, the St George Dragon was certainly a big hit! The member value card is our way of giving members an opportunity to promote your business to all of the membership base. I would encourage you to jump onto our facebook page and put up some kind of offer. It certainly doesn’t have to be a discount offer, think outside the square. Is there another business that you have been doing work with where you can work together and put forward a joint offer? Could you ask your suppliers to provide you with some promotional gear as giveaways? Even if your business isn’t in a position to offer something, jump on and learn how you could support other member businesses in our wonderful community!
We are also extremely proud to announce our mentoring program that kicks off in February. If you are an expert in your field or if you would like to take advantage of all of the incredibly talented members and mentors that are on offer, please check out the article in this newsletter or call Glenda. We have managed to secure one of our members- Ariel Inigo from ActionCOACHES as a joint sponsor, so not only will you get to spend some time outside of your business looking in, but you will get to do it at a fraction of the usual cost.
I mentioned our 16 committee members and with that many people it is great to share the love (or workload) to really try and give as much as we can back to our members. We have therefore set up a number of project teams and if you are interested in getting involved in any of them, we would love your help! The project teams we have set up include Lobbying and Advocacy, Events, Youth, Retailers, Membership, Mentoring, Retired business persons, Processes and IT and Fundraising. These teams are in alignment with the three year strategy we started last year with three focus areas- Retired Business Persons, Youth and of course you- Businesses.
Finally our Christmas party is on the 14th of December, and is at the Kawana Surf Club. We would love to see you there to share a bite to eat and a drink to say "Cheers to 2011 and here’s to an enlightening and prosperous 2012".
Regards Jo
USC and The SIFE Team
Kawana Chamber is very happy to welcome the University of the Sunshine Coast as a new member.
As a local business, do you believe you have something to offer the next generation of business people? The USC SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team has developed a program to work with children from 20 local primary schools, teaching them business skills. The project involves recycling items to create value. Each group will receive mentoring and education on business planning, budgets and logistics. This activity is designed to foster teamwork, and networks between schools on the Sunshine Coast. The project also involves groups using entrepreneurial skills to select a recyclable item from their school and develop a way to add value to it. The groups will receive education and mentoring from USC SIFE members and local business owners in teamwork, value creation, logistics, planning and presentation skills. The aim is to have one USC SIFE mentor and one business mentor for each school group. The groups will work with their and present their ideas to business leaders and USC SIFE at an events afternoon. Prizes will be awarded at this event and media will be invited to attend.
Local businesses can assist USC SIFE greatly by being involved in many different ways. The following resources have identified as critical for this project
- 20 Business owners willing to work with one school group each (three weeks x one hour each) Donations of three major prizes for the awards night
- Printing of 20 Certificates
- Providing judging at awards night
The project will run from March to May 2012. If you would like to be involved, please contact Selina Tomasich on STomasic@usc.edu.au, or leave a message on her mobile - 0423 923 434.
Do you remember being a starving student? Living off two-minute noodles and trying to sneak into the cinema just after the show started to avoid paying? Or was that just me? USC offers student bursaries to help students from low socio-economic backgrounds to succeed in university by giving them the chance to focus more on study and less on paid employment. The USC Study Support Bursary is a pooled fund made up of donations of all amounts. Donors are recognised on the USC Chancellery donor wall, and donations of $2 and over are tax deductible. Have a look online for more information – www.usc.edu.au/study-support-bursary.

JUST MAGIC - an update from our Business Partner -
BUSINESS MATTERS MAGAZINE
Are you taking some time out over the holiday period? It is so important to have some time for you and some family time. I have to say that almost every day my husband and I go to the beach and almost every day I say to him. “We’re not on holiday you know, we live here”, and we both have a smile about just how lucky we feel to live in this beautiful place. How important it is that we assure we take the time to really appreciate where we live and to assure that we are grateful for the wonderful people in our lives. My husband, my family and beautiful friends mean everything to me and I believe that it is very important that we take the time to remind them of that constantly, but especially at the end of a year, we can reflect over the previous year and take stock so to speak.
People often say to me you are so lucky. Lucky to do something you love so passionately, lucky to have a wonderful husband, lucky to have fabulous children, lucky to live in such a beautiful place, lucky lucky lucky, but to be honest it is not luck. They think I am lucky because I am always so happy. But I believe that being happy with whatever and wherever you are right now, doing what you are doing, living where you are living, with the exact partner and children you have, is a choice and a choice that you can make fresh every single day. If you decide TODAY to be lucky and to be completely fine with where you are right now, life actually takes on a whole new meaning and you feel great.
I absolutely believe in be/do/have. If you wait until something to be happy, you’ve heard it, I will be happy when I have the body I want, the job I want, the business I want, the partner I want the blah blah I want. Whereas if you change it that you are happy first, and then do the actions required towards having that thing (replace any of the above), the have just comes, it really does. It is a completely different way of thinking, but it absolutely works.
Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year, thank you so much to those of you who have been writing Business Matters Magazine and my columns here, I truly appreciate your acceptance and support over the last two years and look forward to delivering an even better product to you over the coming years.
Not magic, just common business sense

MENTORING PROGRAM
The Sunshine Coast is home to many wonderful small business people with a wealth of knowledge! Over the last year the Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce has been lucky enough to have many of them speak at our education breakfasts. Our breakfasts have been growing at such a rapid rate that we started to ask our members what made these breakfasts great, “It is so good to get out of the day to day doing of your business to take a look at the bigger picture” was the response from one member, “the session I went to this morning, was really hands on, I can’t believe how much I took out of it” said another. We took this on board and wondered how can we build on this and give even more back to our members? The Kawana Waters Chamber mentoring program was born.
In order to provide you with not only the knowledge, but also the drive to make change happen within your business, the Kawana mentoring program is a little different to most. Firstly, we have engaged the services of one of our members- Ariel Inigo from ActionCOACH Business Coaching to take our mentorees through 6 topics we felt were relevant to small business. These include Business planning, cashflow management, marketing, sales, the importance of processes and procedures and of course people. Mentorees will then be partnered with a Mentor or two to help them actually apply the learnings within their business.
Ariel is the most experienced ActionCOACH on the Sunshine Coast with extensive experience in business and coaching. Ariel relocated to the Sunshine Coast after successfully owning and operating the largest team of ActionCOACH coaches on the Gold Coast and wanting to find a new challenge- so we are obviously really excited about the support that he has provided us with.
The cost of this program would usually be$4,000 per person. However with the sponsorship of Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce and ActionCOACH, we are able to off this program to members at a special price of $132 for the 6 month program ($22 per night).
Please register your interest as soon as possible as places are limited - please contact Glenda 5491 5362 or 0459998845

UPDATE ON HOSPITAL
If you have driven past the hospital site in the last week or so we are sure that you are as amazed and excited as we have been as to the progress of the Private hospital. On the University hospital side of things, Kevin Heggarty has assured us that the current bid process is progressing extremely well and that he is absolutely confident that all stated project timelines will be achieved. We are of course keeping on top of the progress as much as possible and will keep you posted.
